PASTE... and not the kind you eat!

During a long day of walking around the city I ended up in Union Square. Anyone who knows New York City during the holidays knows all about the awesome craft shops set up all along the street.

While browsing through all the amazing handmade and unique stuff I bumped into a small shop selling the funniest t-shirts ever! I absolutely had to get one, actually two!

They are called PASTE T-SHIRTS and they will crack you up. Check out the one I got!

If you aren’t laughing (or at least smiling) then you have no sense of humor. Created by Jason Laurits, these shirts are super soft and are all hand printed in Brooklyn, NY. Shirts are $32.

Rebecca & Drew: You will need your bra size for this one!

Last weekend, while attending The Blueprint for Style fashion event here in NYC, I was introduced to a company that is definitely offering something unique: a customizable dress shirt for women based on bra size and height.

It’s called the Trio-Fit method and Rebecca & Drew Manufacturing have nailed this down to a science. First, they determine your correct bra size and then they take your height to determine whether you are long or regular. Simply put, the trio-fit system takes bra-size, height and body shape to create a nearly custom fit.

However, the customization doesn’t stop there. You still have the option to pick the style of the shirt or dress, the collar, the cuffs, the sleeve length, the buttons and the list goes on. You can even get custom embroidery anywhere on the garment. As shown in the images below, my favorite detail to these shirts is the placement of the buttons. NO MORE SAFETY PINNING THE BUST AREA!! That’s music to my ears. My button down shirts always pull at the bust and it drives me crazy. That could possibly be why I wear so few business shirts. 

 

I do think Rebecca & Drew are on to something great that many women can appreciate. Shirts are roughly $195. Pier Eleven- Bringing Fashion and Art Together!

You can't dock your boat at this Pier Eleven, but you can purchase artfully crafted “alternate wearable narratives.” Emphasis on the “artfully” as these clothes are designed by artists hand picked from around the world. And like any work of art, the more it's coveted, the more its worth.

Derived from the Pier 11 in New York City down by Wall Street, this Pier Eleven is set to bring the world of fashion and art together. (Use the code: pier11eleven to access the site) The idea behind this up-and-coming company is a complex one.

Each collection is comprised of a theme and piece. Artists, from around the world, with unique and vastly different styles, come together to create the pieces that will be showed in each collection.

What is so different about this company you might ask. Well, each piece in a current collection has a set price of $90. Once that collection is archived and the next collection is presented, the archived pieces are then subject to a complex logarithm that was explained as a “dynamic pricing model (DPM).” This DPM increases the prices of the archived pieces according to supply and demand. Confused yet? Simply put, once no longer a part of the current collection, the most popular pieces become more and more expensive as demand continues to go up.

One of the creators poses the question: “At what point is a consumer no longer buying a piece of clothing but buying into a piece of art?”

Each collection is artfully crafted and profound in many ways but something I found interesting about the actual clothing is that the current shirts have tags on the outside to represent a mobile gallery, similar to the tags you find in a museum next to a piece of art.

The first collection uses black and white photography to express the theme while the second collection, which will launch sometime this January, will use audio to convey its theme.

Vaute Couture bringing two worlds together!

Veganism and fashion are two topics that are rarely paired together. However, I have found a line that does just that. Vaute Couture is a new line, launching this fall 2009, that focuses on creating high fashion clothing that uses animal friendly and eco-conscious materials. Established by Leanne Hilgart, who was recently named top 20 under 30 by VegNews Magazine, has completely self-funded her venture.

I asked Leanne what her biggest challenges were in launching this line. Her response: “More than just starting a fashion label, I approach this venture as an inventor, not as much as a designer, focusing on fabric research as an essential to the line. It took 8 months alone to discover the right fabrics to work with -- this was a challenge most designers don't have.”

After reading deeper into the development of these materials I found that, indeed, these are some complicated fabrics: textured Polartec and Zero Waste Satin Ripstop just to name a few.

If you haven’t heard of Etsy then you are really missing out! My friend Chelsea Barber, the amazing woman behind UNordinary Chic, told me about this website and I have been hooked ever since.

Etsy is an online retailer that brings together buyers and sellers of all things handmade. This is a great site to check out to shop for you or for others especially with these amazing prices. The immense variety and uniqueness of each item is guaranteed to please any shopper.
